About Chogoria Forest Reserve

Chogoria Forest Reserve

Chogoria Forest Reserve is located on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kenya, within Meru County, Kenya. Covering an extensive area of montane forest, the reserve plays a crucial role in the hydrology of the region by protecting water catchments feeding into rivers such as Nithi and the densely forested Chogoria River basin. The reserve's landscape ranges in elevation from about 2,000 meters up to 4,500 meters near the peaks of Mount Kenya, creating diverse ecological zones from dense indigenous forest to alpine moorlands. It supports a variety of flora including hardwood species like camphor and podocarpus as well as rich undergrowth harboring medicinal plants and orchids. Fauna includes golden monkeys, bushbucks, giant forest hogs, and numerous bird species such as the African grey parrot and Hartlaub's turaco. Historically, the forest has been vital for indigenous communities and remains protected under Kenya Forest Service auspices. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the reserve primarily as part of the renowned Chogoria Route, one of the scenic trekking paths ascending Mount Kenya’s peaks, offering dramatic landscapes with waterfalls, bamboo zones, and glacial valleys. Birdwatching, hiking, and nature photography are popular activities, with opportunities to spot rare endemic species. While the reserve provides a serene natural environment, it is also important for scientific research and conservation, balancing human use with ecosystem protection. Visitors typically access Chogoria Forest Reserve from the nearby town of Chogoria, which serves as a gateway for mountaineers and ecotourists alike.
